Fatemeh Azari graduated with her BS in Mechanical Engineering cum laude from the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) in May 2021, then embarked on a direct Ph.D. program in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in Fall 2021. Her thesis work is supported by a $3.2 million R01 grant from the NIH, collaborating on an interdisciplinary project with bio-engineers, urologists, and pharmacologists.
Before starting her Ph.D., Azari had already distinguished herself academically, earning nearly $70,000 in scholarships, including the ASME Scholarship and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers International Scholarship. Her tenure as a College of Engineering Senator at UNLV, where she played a key role in creating an international scholarship program, highlighted her leadership and commitment to educational opportunities. Additionally, she was the founder and president of the Creative Math Club and president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) student chapter at UNLV.
She has co-authored a journal paper on bladder aging and contributed to the World Congress of Biomechanics 2022. Despite her background in mechanical engineering, she expanded her training and networking, notably with faculty from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. She has developed expertise in mechanics, micro-CT, and animal surgery, now performing complex surgeries on rodents as a recognized surgical staff member.
Additionally, Azari's role as a Teaching Assistant for Introduction to Thermodynamics at Pitt, where she was voted Best Teaching Assistant of the Year by the mechanical engineering student cohort, underscores her dedication to educational excellence and creating an inclusive academic environment.
In the realm of community service, Azari served as the Outreach and Service Officer for the Pitt Engineering Graduate Student Organization (EGSO) and plays a significant role in the Pitt Graduate Women in Engineering Network (GWEN), motivating high school students towards STEM fields and advocating for women in engineering. Additionally, as a Journal reviewer for the Pitt Undergraduate Journal of Ingenium 2022 and an Oral Presentation Session Moderator for the American Heart Association (AHA 2022) Fellows Research Day, her leadership and dedication to scientific discourse are evident.
